DISC 2
Youri Egorov – 1977 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.
In 1977, Youri partcipated in the Van Cliburn Competition in Fort Worth, Texas. Youri became
the public favorite, however he did not make it to the finals. The audience raised $10,000 to
support a debut concert in the United States. In January 1978, Youri made his US debut in
New York's Alice Tully Hall. In April, he replaced Murray Perahia in Chicago, and on December
12, 1978, Youri made his Carnegie Hall debut. On December 10, 1978 Youri made his US
orchestra debut in El Paso Texas, Youri performed Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Paganini
Theme in A minor Op.43. The 1977 Competition was recorded, and a series of CD recordings
of the Van Cliburn Internatonal Piano Competitionn have been released on the VAI label.
Steven DeGroote's 1977 The Cliburn recording, as well as Alexander Toradze and Jeffrey
Swann's, made it to CD, but it wasn't from Youri Egorov. For the first time, recordings of Youri
Egorov's Van Cliburn performance are available to listeners. The recordings have always
been archived but never made accessible for releasing content. As a result, the tapes never
made their way to YouTube, for example. The two preliminary rounds were originally
captured on cassete tape with minimal microphone equipment. The semi-final was recorded
using a reel-to-reel recorder. Youri also performed with the Tokyo String Quartet, that
recording has been archived but is not permited to be used on this CD release. This CD
release was originally going to be a single CD including a selecton of Youri's 1977 Van Cliburn
performances, but it was decided to release the complete recordings as a two-CD set.
